10 Common Ukrainian Slang Words

If you have informal communication with Ukrainians, most probably you will hear some slang words or phrases you won’t understand at first. In today’s post, we will teach you some very common slang words you can hear from Ukrainians (especially from youth). 

We don’t want you to overuse slang in your speech, but you need to know its meaning because slang is the part of the language people use and hear in their everyday communications.

Let’s get started.

1.Круто (kruto) adv., крутий/крута adj. – cool.

Це так круто вміти грати на гітарі. It is so cool to play the guitar.

Він дуже крутий спеціаліст із психології. He is a very cool psychologist.

Synonyms: класно (klasno), прикольно (prykolno), кльово (klovo).

2. Народ (люди) (narod, liudy) n. – folks (people).

Народ, давайте підемо разом до кафе. Folks, let’s go to the cafe.

3. Шара (на шару) (shara, na sharu) n. – free of charge (for free).

Чому б не проїхатися до Києва і назад на шару?  Why not ride to Kyiv and back for free?

Synonym: на халяву (na khaliavu).

4. Нести (nesty) v. imperf. – to talk nonsense. 

Що вона несе? Я нічого не розумію. What is she talking about? I don’t understand any of it.

Synonyms: верзти (verzty), чесати маячню (chesaty maiachniu). 

5. Забити на щось (zabyty na shchos) v. imperf. – to bail on something.

Забий на проблеми, пішли гуляти по місту. Bail on your problems, let’s explore the city.

6. Зашквар (zashkvar) n. – something disgraceful or lame.

Зашкварений (zashkvarenyi) adj.

Зашкваритися (zashkvarytysia) v. perf. 

Ця організація вже зашкварена, вони знатні корупціонери. This organization is disgraceful. They are known to be corrupt.

Synonyms: відстій (vidstii), дно (dno).

7. Ловити хайп v. imperf. (lovyty khaip), хайпувати v. imperf. (khaipuvaty), хайпонути v. perf. (khaiponuty) – from English “to hype”, to repeatedly advertise and discuss something in order to attract someone interest.

Продавці і маркетологи люблять ловити хайп навколо своїх продуктів. Salesmen and marketers both like to hype up their products.

8. Втюхатись v. perf. (vtiukhatys), втюхуватись (vtiukhuvatys) v. imperf. – to have a crush on somebody.

Цей хлопець втюхався у мене, але мені він не подобається. This guy has a crush on me but I don’t like him.

9. Мажор n. (mazhor), мажорний (mazhornyi) adj. – a person who is financially well off; affluent.

Ми живемо у мажорному районі. We live in an affluent neighbourhood. 

10. Здибанка (zdybanka) n., здибатись (zdybatys) v. perf. – a meeting; to meet up with someone.

Давай здибаємось наступного тижня. Let’s meet up next week.
