Lesson 9: The verb. Present Tense. The First Conjugation Group.

Welcome to the 9th lesson of the course “From Absolute Beginner to a Confident Speaker”. We will learn with you today the verb and the First Conjugation Group in the Ukrainian language. Let`s get it started!

Guys, we are starting with you one of the most important grammar topics – verbs, the present tense and 1st conjugation group. In the video lecture, I explained to you in detail all the information about the formation of personal endings for the 1st conjugation. Let`s sum up them in the table below.

Exercise 1. (Вправа 1.) Conjugate the verbs that belong to the 1st conjugation group. 

For example, думати – to think 

я думаю 

ти думаєш

він/вона/воно думає 

ми думаємо 

ви думаєте 

вони думають 

Знати, грати, працювати, слухати, розуміти, повторювати, читати, запитувати, відповідати, відпочивати, вивчати, снідати, обідати, вечеряти, мити, записувати, чекати, готувати, перевіряти, слідкувати.

Exercise 2. (Вправа 2.)  Use the correct form of the verb “to read” — “читати”.

For example, Я … текст.

Я читаю текст.

1.Ти … роман. 2. Ми … текст. 3.Він … журнал. 4. Він… лист. 5.Ви… вправу. 6.Я … розповідь. 7.Ми … пропозицію. 8. Ви … правило. 9. Вона … лист.

Exercise 3. (Вправа 3.) Use the correct forms of personal pronouns.

For example,. . . читаємо текст.

Ми читаємо текст.

1…. читаємо книгу. 2. … читаю журнал. 3. … читаємо вірш. 4. … читаєш документи. 5. … читає розповідь. 6. … читають роман. 7. … читає меню. 8 …. читаю правило.

Exercise 4. (Вправа 4.) Use the correct form of the verb “to repeat” — “повторювати”

For example, Він … урок.

Він повторює урок.

1.Ми … правило. 2.Я … текст.3. Він … слово. 4. Вона … дієслово. 5.Ви … речення. 6. Вони … урок.

Exercise 5. (Вправа 5.). Use the correct form of the verb повторювати, знати, розуміти, вивчати, слухати.

For example, Я читаю лист. Ми читаємо лист.

Ти читаєш лист. Ви читаєте лист.

Він читає лист. Вони читають лист.

1.Я повторюю текст. 2. Я знаю правило. 3. Я розумію тебе. 4. Я слухаю радіо. 5. Я відповідаю урок. 6. Я вивчаю українську мову.

Exercise 6. (Вправа 6.). Open brackets and conjugate the verbs.

1.Я (читати) книгу. 2. Вона (малювати) картину. 3. Він (слухати) музику. 4. Ми (йти) на роботу. 5. Ти (знати) правило. 6. Ви (працювати) в офісі. 7. Я (розуміти) англійську. 8. Він (розмовляти) українською. 8. Ми (читати) журнал. 9. Вони (перекладати) текст.

Exercise 7 (Вправа 7)  Make a phrase. 

1.  ми	a)     пише роман
2.  він	b)    читаєте вірш
3.  ви	c)     слухаю радіо
4.  я	d)    повторюємо слова
5.  вона	e)     замовляють чай
6.  ти	f)      знає тебе

Exercise 8 (Вправа 8): Complete a dialogue using Nominative or Accusative Case. Look for unknown words in the table.

Exercise 9 (Вправа 9): Write the verbs in the circles below and complete the circles with the nouns in the Accusative case.

Exercise 10 (Вправа 10). Correct the mistake(s) in each sentence.

1. Мою вчительку звате Бет. Вона викладають англійську мову в школі. На заняттях ми часто читаю тексти, пишу вправи і слухаю аудіювання. Іноді ми граєш в ігри чи розв’язуєш кросворди. Бет багато працюває, тому його заняття інформативні та цікаві. Я завжди з нетерпінням чекає на уроки з англійської мови з Бет.

2. Я знаю Джон та Олівія. Вони – фермери і щодня вони працює на фермі. Кожного ранку Джон та Олівія снідаємо вдома. Джон не готують, але він купують всі продукти у супермаркеті. Потім Олівія прибираєте на кухні і Джон іноді допомагаєте їй. Увечері Джон та Олівія гуляю у центрі, слухаю музику вдома або танцювають у ресторані.

Exercise 11 (Вправа 11). Complete the following sentences using pronouns in brackets in the Accusative case. Pay your attention to the underlined first conjugation group of verbs in the present tense.

Exercise 12 (Вправа 12). Put the words into the correct order to make sentences. Change the verbs in the present tense and use the Accusative case when appropriate.

Наприклад: готувати / яєчня / на / дружина / Моя / часто / сніданок / і – Моя дружина часто готує бутерброди і яєчню на сніданок.
