Lesson 5: The Noun. Gender of the noun. Nominative case. How to introduce yourself.

Welcome to the 5th lesson of the course “From Absolute Beginner to a Confident Speaker”. We will learn with you today the noun and the Nominative case in the Ukrainian language. Let`s get it started!

When we talk about basic Ukrainian grammar, it starts with the noun, because it is the most important part of speech. In Ukrainian, language noun has case (Nominative, Vocative, Genitive, Accusative, Locative, Dative and Instrumental), gender (masculine, feminine, neuter), and number (singular, plural) distinctions.
The nominative case (Називний відмінок) of a noun expresses its base form, therefore, we can determine the gender of the noun in this case.
There are 3 genders –
- masculine – чоловічий рід;
- feminine – жіночий рід;
- neuter – середній рід.

Exercise 1 (Вправа 1) Determine the gender of the nouns.
For example, погода – вона.

Exercise 2 (Вправа 2) Use personal pronouns due to the gender of the noun.
For example, Це хліб. (Masculine) Він свіжий.

Exercise 6 (Вправа 6): Write the words given below in the correct column.

Exercise 7 (Вправа 7): Describe a picture according to the example given below, using the words in bold. Pay your attention to the Nominative case.
Це місто Харків. Харків – моє рідне місто. Воно велике і гарне. Попереду великий торговий центр і паркінг. Там завжди є машини. Ліворуч – перукарня і барбершоп, а праворуч – маленьке, але затишне кафе і планетарій. У кафе є смачна кава, капучино, чай, смузі чи коктейлі, а ще торти, тістечка і морозиво. Позаду стоять будинки. Це житловий квартал «Урбан Сіті». Там живуть люди. Неподалік (недалеко) є станція метро і автобусна зупинка. Також у місті є парк і озеро. Харків – комфортне місто.
Exercise 8 (Вправа 8): Complete the dialogue by translating the English words in brackets into Ukrainian.
Олеся: Добрий а) (day).
Джон: б) (Hello). Як справи?
Олеся: в) (Very good), дякую. А ви як?
Джон: Чудово. г) (What is your name)?
Олеся: Мене ґ) (to call) Олеся. А вас?
Джон: д) (I) – Джон. Дуже приємно.
Олеся: Взаємно. е) (Where are you from)?
Джон: Я є) (from) Канади. А ж) (you) канадка також?
Олеся: з) (No), я – українка.
Джон: и) (Are you Ukrainian)? Ви з Києва?
Олеся: Ні, я не з Києва. Київ – велике і) (city). Я живу у Тернополі.
Listen to the dialogue again and check your answers. Then listen and repeat the dialogue.
