Welcome to the 4th lesson of the course “From Absolute Beginner to a Confident Speaker”. We will learn with you today about different types of questions and answers in the Ukrainian language. Let`s get it started!
Guys, please keep in mind a very important rule – in the Ukrainian language the word order doesn`t matter, but you must always follow the grammar rules (like cases, conjugation of the verbs, and gender agreement). A native speaker of Ukrainian will always understand you if you follow this simple rule.
For example, EN: I love playing the guitar.
UA: Я люблю грати на гітарі.
Люблю я грати на гітарі.
Грати на гітарі я люблю.
На гітарі люблю я грати.
Люблю грати на гітарі. (We can omit the personal pronoun “Я” here because the conjugated verb indicates it in the sentence.)
P.S. We will learn the conjugation of the verbs a little bit later.

Exercise 1 (Вправа 1): Transform the affirmative sentences into negative and vice versa.
1. Це – фільм «Барбі» і він – цікавий.
2. Вони з Едмонтона, а не з Оттави.
3. Джулія – не моя сестра, вона моя дружина.
4. Це новий телефон.
5. Іван – не з України, він – еквадорець.
6. Цей будинок дуже великий.
7. Сьогодні гарна погода.
8. Я не голодний.
9. Стівен і Клер не вдома, вони зараз на морі.
10. Це не моя книга.
Exercise 2 (Вправа 2): Translate the questions in brackets into Ukrainian.
1. Вас звати Джек чи Джон? Ви – лікар? Ви з Канади? (No, I am not Jack, my name is John. No, I am not a doctor, I am an engineer. Yes, I am from Canada.)
2. Він українець? (No, he isn’t Ukrainian, he is Canadian.)
3. Бен вивчає українську мову? Бен вчиться в університеті? (Yes, Ben learns Ukrainian. No, Ben does not study at the university.)
4. Патрісія любить каву і шоколад? (Yes, Patricia loves coffee. She also likes chocolate.)
5. Нью-Йорк маленьке місто? Торонто велике місто? (No, New York is not a small city. Yes, Toronto is a big city.)
6. Сапар і Мохамед – друзі? (No, Sapar and Mohamed are not friends, they are brothers.)
7. Це ти на фото? (No, it isn’t me in the photo. This is Thomas.)
8. Томас має телефон? (Yes, Thomas has a telephone, he also has a laptop.)
9. Це твоя мама? (No, this is not my mother, this is my sister.)
10. То твої окуляри? (No, that’s not my glasses.)
Exercise 3 (Вправа 3): Answer the questions.
Exercise 4 (Вправа 4): Listen to the dialogue and fill in the gaps. Mind intonation.
Даніель: Привіт, Синтіє. Як ________________?
Синтія: Привіт, Даніелю. У мене все ________________, дякую. А ти як?
Даніель: Все супер.
Синтія: Що це? Це ________________?
Даніель: Так, це ________________. Тут фото. Ось, це ________________ і Роберт.

Listen to the dialogue again and check your answers. Then listen and repeat the dialogue.
