Lesson 22: The Past and Future Simple Tenses

Welcome to the 22nd lesson of the course “From Absolute Beginner to a Confident Speaker”. We will learn with you today the Past and Future Tenses in the Ukrainian language. Let`s get it started!
The formation of the Past Simple/Continuous is very simple in the Ukrainian language. There are no conjugation groups or exceptions. Let`s check out the table with the endings that we need to add to form the Past Tense.
The present form of the verb “to be” is “бути”. Although when we conjugate it in the present, it has only one form – “є” for all persons. In the past tense everything is easier, let`s check out the second table with the forms of the verb “to be” in the Past.

Reflective verbs with the particle –ся in the Past
You should add the particle -ся to the end of a word in the past form, for example,
Мити – мив, мила, мило, мили (to wash).
Митися – мився, милася, милося, милися (to wash oneself).
Зустрічатися – зустрічався, зустрічалася, зустрічалося, зустрічалися (to go out with; to meet with).
Сподіватися – сподівався, сподівалася, сподівалося, сподівалися (to hope).
Some irregular verbs
Їсти: він їв, вона їла, воно їло, вони їли – to eat
Йти/іти: він йшов (ішов), вона йшла (ішла), воно йшло (ішло), вони йшли (ішли) – (to go on foot).
Words with -е-, (-о- not everytime) stem in the masculine change into -i-
нести: ніс, несла, несло, несли (to carry something/someone)
везти: віз, везла, везло, везли (to drive something/someone)
могти: міг, могла, могло, могли (can)
The Future Tense
There are 2 ways how we form the Future Simple/Continuous Tense. You can use any of them, and there is no difference between them in meaning.
Simple Form of the Future Tense
The first variant is formed by adding personal endings to infinitives.
Complex Form of the Future Tense
The second variant is formed by conjugating the verb “to be” – “бути” in the future + the verb in the infinitive verb.

Exercise 1. (Вправа 1.) Use the Past Tense.
For example, Ми (зустрічатися) вчора у кав’ярні. – Ми зустрілися вчора у кав’ярні.
1. Вони (митися) у душі. 2. Раніше я (одягатися) швидко. 3. Він (почуватися) погано. 4. Вчора Олена (бачитися) з Андрієм. 5. Ми (гратися) з дитиною.
Exercise 2. (Вправа 2.) Use the Past Tense.
For example, Чому він образи..ся? – Чому він образився?
1. Куди ви ходи… вчора? Вчора ми ходи… до театру. 2. А вона куди ходи… вчора? А вона ходи… до кав’ярні. 3. Олесю, ти ходи… вчора на роботу? Ні. 4. Куди він ходи… вчора? 5. Вистава трива… 2 години. 6. Фільм трива… дві години з половиною. 7. Про що вони говори…? 8. Вона думал…, що він любить каву. 9. Він не зна…, що вона любить шоколад. 10. Звідки вони приїха…?
Exercise 3. (Вправа 3.) Use the Past Tense.
For example, Читати – він читав, вона читала, воно читало, вони читали.
Робити, працювати, розмовляти, відпочивати, розповідати, знати, навчати, говорити, слухати, нести.
Exercise 4. (Вправа 4.) Put the question in the Past Tense.
For example, – …? – Вранці я працювала.
– Що ти робила вранці? – Вранці я працювала.
1.– … ? – Вдень ми обідали. 2. – … ? – Ввечері він вечеряв. 3. – … ? – Вранці вона прибирала кімнату. 4. – … ? – Після занять вона ходила в магазин. 5. – … ? – Сьогодні вони не слухали музики. 6. – … ? – Позавчора я дивилася цей фільм. 7. – … ? – Вчора моя мама відпочивала. 8. – … ? – Вранці ми снідали. 9. – … ? – Ми вже читали ці запитання на минулому занятті. 10. – … ? – Після обіду вони спали.
Exercise 5. (Вправа 5.) Use the Simple and Complex forms of the Future Tense.
For example, Я … читати текст.
Я читатиму текст./Я буду читати текст.
1.Ти … читати роман. 2. Ми … читати текст. 3.Він … читати журнал. 4. Вона … читати лист. 5.Ви…читати вправу. 6.Я …читати розповідь. 7. Ми … читати пропозицію. 8. Ви … читати правило. 9. Вона … читати лист.
Exercise 6. (Вправа 6.) Use the correct forms of personal pronouns in future tense sentences.
For example,. . . будемо читати текст.
Ми будемо читати текст.
1.… буду читати книгу. 2. … будеш читати журнал. 3. … будемо читати вірш. 4. … будете читати документи. 5. … буде читати розповідь. 6. …будуть читати роман. 7. … буде читати меню. 8 …. буду читати правило.
Exercise 7. (Вправа 7.) Open the brackets and make the future tense by adding the verb “will”.
For example, Я (розуміти) українську.
Я буду розуміти українську.
1.Я … (читати) книгу. 2. Вона … (малювати) картину. 3. Він … (слухати) музику. 4. Ми … (йти) на роботу. 5. Ти … (знати) правило. 6. Ви … (працювати) в офісі. 7. Я …(розуміти) англійську. 8. Він … (розмовляти) українською. 9. Ми …(читати) журнал. 10. Вони … (перекладати) текст.
