Lesson 12: Genitive case. Cardinal Numbers 0-19.

Welcome to the 12th lesson of the course “From Absolute Beginner to a Confident Speaker”. We will learn with you today the Genitive case and the Cardinal Numbers in the Ukrainian language. Let`s get it started!

Note: In rule №9 of the lecture presentation, in the example sentence – Я бажаю вам щастя, здоровʼя, кохання… I highlighted the wrong word in the Genitive case. The words щастя, здоровʼя, кохання are in the Genitive case, not вам.

Let`s start with the easiest topic of this lesson. In the video lecture, we practised with you how to count from 0 to 19 in the Ukrainian language. I would like to ask you to learn the numbers by heart. To help you with that I additionally recorded for you the voiceover of the numbers. Please listen and repeat after many times.

0 – нуль
1 – один
2 – два
3 –три
4 – чотири
5 – п’ять
6 – шість
7 – сім
8 – вісім
9 – дев’ять
10 – десять

12 – дванадцять

The Genitive case 

This is the 4th and the most difficult case in the Ukrainian language because it has 9 rules of usage. We must learn and practice all of them. First of all, let`s check out the table on how to form a Genitive case correctly. 

We also put personal and possessive pronouns in the Genitive case. Please memorize the following forms below. 

The usage of the Genitive case

1. To express possession or belonging in the Ukrainian language:

Слова викладача. – Teacher`s words.

Це окуляри Анни. – This is Anna`s glasses.

Чий це телефон? – Антона. – Whose telephone is this? – Anthony`s.

2. When we need to use the preposition “of” in English:

Це центр України. – This is the centre of Ukraine.

Вашингтон – столиця Америки. – Washington is the capital of America.

3. After quantity words:

Горнятко кави – a cup of coffee

Пакет соку – a carton of juice

Мало води – little water

4. After the negative verbs:

Я не хочу морозива. – I don`t want ice cream.

Ми не бачимо вас. – We don`t see you.

Він не чує галасу. – He does not hear a noise.

5. After the word “немає”, which is the negative form of “є”:

На столі немає хліба. – There is no bread on the table.

Вони не мають грошей. – They don`t have money.

У країні немає корупції. – There is no corruption in the country.

6. With the partitive “some”:

Я бажаю тістечка. – I would like some cake.

Дайте мені солі. – Give me some salt.

7. With numbers from 5 and more we use the Genitive case.

5 (п’ять) людей – 5 people

10 (десять) вікон_­­ – 10 windows

12 (дванадцять) апельсинів – 12 oranges

18 (вісімнадцять) картин_ – 18 pictures

Pay attention: 2 (два) is used for m.g. and n.g. E.g. Два чоловіки, два моря;

2 (дві) is used for f.g. E.g. Дві жінки, дві кави.

8. To say the date:

When we need to say the date, we have to use the months in the Genitive case:

січень – січня, лютий – лютого, березень – березня, квітень – квітня, травень – травня, червень – червня, липень – липня, серпень – серпня, вересень – вересня, жовтень – жовтня, листопад – листопада, грудень – грудня.

For example, перше вересня – the 1st of September;

п’яте червня – the 5th of June;

десяте листопада – the 10th of November.

9. After the certain verbs, like боятися, досягати, бажати, чекати etc.

After certain verbs, like боятися, бажати, досягати, etc.

After some verbs we have to use nouns in the genitive case:

• боятися – to fear; to be afraid of

боятися темряви – to be afraid of darkness

• бажати/побажати – to wish
• Я бажаю вам щастя, здоров’я, кохання… – I wish you happiness, health, love…
• досягати– to achieve

досягнути успіху – to reach success.

10. With some prepositions requiring its use, amongst which are:

• у/в – at one’s place

Він у мене. – He is at my place.

• до – to

Я йду до кав’ярні. – I am going to a coffee shop.

• від – from

Я йду від подруги. – I am coming from a friend’s place.

• з – out of/from

Я йду з магазину. – I am coming from/out of a shop.

• біля – at/near/beside

Я біля будинку. – I am near the house.

• без – without

Я без вакцини. – I am without a vaccine.

Exercises

Exercise 3 (Вправа 3) Put the nouns and pronouns in the Genitive case. 

For example, сонце (Nominative) – сонця (Genitive). 

Мама, він, дитина, вона, стіл, чашка, воно, море, вікно, ми, телефон, студентка, ви, зошит, ручка, магазин, ти, сало, телевізор, я, дівчина, хлопець, вони, дядько, смартфон, робота.

Exercise 4 (Вправа 4) Put the words in the Genitive case. 

1.Хрещатик – центральна вулиця (столиця). 2. Вона не їсть (хліб). 3. На столі лежать п’ять (яблука). 4. Вони не слухають (музика). 5. У склянці мало (вода). 6. Сьогодні дев’яте (травень). 7. Джон родом із (Канада). 8. У будинку немає (світло). 9. У (я) є ідея. 10. Це пальто (Світлана). 

Exercise 5 (Вправа 5) Put the words in the Genitive case. 

1. У (вони) немає жодних (запитання). 2. У (син) є сім (іграшки). 3. Він завжди п’є каву без (цукор). 4. Ми йдемо від (робота) до (ресторан) пішки. 5. Гості бажали імениннику багато (достаток), (здоров’я) та (кохання). 6. На жаль, нам не вдалося досягти цієї (ціль). 7. У холодильнику лежить п’ятнадцять (лимони). 8. Це дисертація (професор). 9. Ця пекарня не випікає (пироги). 10. У перукарні немає (черга). 

Exercise 6 (Вправа 6) Compare the Nominative, Accusative, and Genitive cases and make the sentences from the words given below, using the nouns in the Nominative, Accusative, and Genitive cases (as shown in the table).

1. (книга і журнал / читати);
2. (суп, тістечко, варення і каша / їсти);
3. (Діана і Чарльз / знати);
4. (машина і трактор / мати);
5. (тато і мама / любити);
6. (стіл, крісло і шафа / купувати);
7. (кава, чай, какао / пити);
8. (Єлизавета і Томас / бачити);
9. (креслення і математика / вивчати);
10. (сестра, брат, дядько / зустрічати).

Exercise 7 (Вправа 7) Open the brackets and put the words in the Genitive case. Draw your attention to the Genitive markers.

 Привіт, мамо і тату!

Я вже приїхав до __________ (Україна) з __________ (Камерун). З __________ (Дуала) до __________ (Київ) я прилетів літаком, а з __________ (Київ) до __________ (Івано-Франківськ) я приїхав поїздом. Я вже вчуся в університеті (of) __________ (нафта) і __________ (газ). Тут я вивчаю фізику, хімію, інформатику, математику, але я не вивчаю __________ (література). Я живу на квартирі і моя квартира недалеко від __________ (університет). Також біля __________ (квартира) є аптека, автобусна зупинка і великий супермаркет, де можна купити продукти, багато __________ (продукти): овочі, фрукти, пакет (of) __________ (молоко) чи (of) __________ (сметана), пляшку (of) __________ (вода) чи (of) __________ (сік), пачку (of) __________ (макарони), (of) __________ (рис) або (of) __________ (гречка). Тому, мамо і тату, не переживайте за мене, я не голодний. Недалеко від __________ (супермаркет) живе мій новий друг Іван. З __________ (дім) до головного __________ (корпус) (of) __________ (університет) йти 10 хвилин пішки. Зараз в Україні зима і тут дуже холодно: немає __________ (сонце) і __________ (тепло). У мене немає __________ (куртка), __________ (шапка), __________ (шарф), __________ (светр) і __________ (черевики). Також я маю ноутбук, але він не мій, а __________ (Іван – possession). Тому завтра я мушу йти в магазин чи на ринок купувати одяг і техніку. Але у мене немає __________ (гроші). Будь ласка, вишліть мені багато __________ (гроші) на мій банківський рахунок.

Exercise 8 (Вправа 8) Write the sentences correctly. Put questions as shown in the example below.

 Наприклад: Я не знаю, де Кевін. Він пішов від я.

Від кого пішов Кевін? – Він пішов від мене.

1. У вони є нова машина «Ford».
2. Я п’ю каву без цукор.
3. Це фото Ахмед.
4. Вдома немає молоко.
5. Недалеко від парк є озеро.
6. До ми їде Джон.
7. Томас живе у сестра.
8. Діти купують ці квіти для мама.
9. Джейсон п’є чай без лимон.
10. Це велосипед Анна.
11. Генрі не може жити без вона.
12. Біля магазин є аптека.

 Exercise 9 (Вправа 9) Translate into Ukrainian. Use the words in the table.

Mind!

There is a big zoo in Toronto. Many animals live there: elephants, giraffes, crocodiles, camels, monkeys and even flamingos. Two crocodiles are at the lake now. There are five lions and three zebras near the crocodiles. One camel and three elephants are lying far from them. Four pinguins are playing near the camel. There are ten monkeys and four koalas are sitting in the tree. I can see a few cockatoos there too. The monkeys are eating bananas and the koalas are eating eucalyptus. Five giraffes are drinking water from the lake. One panda is sitting not far from the tree and six tigers are having rest there too. Some turtles are walking around. But where is a flamingo? I can’t see any flamingo. They are sleeping now. Oh my God, there are so many spiders over there!!! I’m very frightened of them.

Exercise 10 (Вправа 10) Find and correct 10 mistakes in the dialogue.

Даніель: Привіт, Маріє. Я знаю, у тебе скоро відпустка.
Марія: О так, з березень до квітень. А у тебе коли?
Даніель: А я планую влітку: з червень до серпень. Це у цей понеділок вже буде перше березня. Тобто тебе не буде з понеділка?
Марія: Так, я вже буду відпочивати з понеділок.
Даніель: Чудово! У тебе є вже плани?
Марія: Звичайно. З вівторок до п’ятниця я ще буду вдома, я хочу прибрати у квартирі. А з субота до вівторка я планую їхати до батьків у Торонто. Я хочу допомогти їм там. А ти маєш плани на відпустку?
Даніель: Так, я планую подорожувати до липень і з серпень я буду вже тут.

Exercise 11 (Вправа 11) Listen to the song and underline the nouns in Genitive case in it.

У мене немає дому
