Lesson 10: Second Conjugation Group. Common Ukrainian verbs.

Welcome to the 10th lesson of the course “From Absolute Beginner to a Confident Speaker”. We will learn with you today the Second Conjugation Group in the Ukrainian language. Let`s get it started!

We continue to learn the conjugation of Ukrainian verbs and today we are going to focus on the 2nd conjugation group. Most of the verbs belong to the 1st conjugation and less to the 2nd one. But the last one has a lot of exceptions in its formation and irregular verbs. Let`s check out the ending for the 2nd Conjugation Group. 

I have already recorded another video about the 2nd conjugation group. It can be additionally a good resource to revise this topic again. 

Let`s compare the endings of 1st and 2nd conjugation groups

Exercise 1 (Вправа 1) Conjugate the verbs that belong to the 2nd conjugation group. 

For example, їсти – to eat 

я їм 

ти їси 

він, вона, воно їсть 

ми їмо 

ви їсте 

вони їдять  

Бачити, радити, ставити, ділити, кричати, мовчати, курити, палити, доводити, вірити, носити, ненавидіти, знаходити, сидіти, робити, платити, дзвонити, ловити, любити, лежати, стояти, спати, говорити.

Do the exercises in which you need to conjugate the verbs of the 1st and 2nd conjugation groups. 

Exercise 2 (Вправа 2) Open brackets and conjugate the verbs.

For example, Я (вчити) українську мову.

Я вивчаю українську мову. 

1.Ми (читати) статтю. 2. Я (йти) в університет. 3. Вона (слухати) гурт «Rolling Stones». 4. Олена (писати) вправу. 5. Люди (знати) закони. 6. Ми (працювати) на фабриці. 7. Я (розуміти) французьку. 8. Іван (розмовляти) англійською. 8. Мої друзі (любити) грати в бейсбол. 9. Я (перекладати) вірш. 10. Вони (робити) цю справу разом. 

Exercise 3 (Вправа 3) Use the correct forms of personal pronouns.

For example,. . . читаєш текст.

Ти читаєш текст.

1. … люблю слухати класичну музику. 2. … говорять завжди дуже голосно. 3. … співаємо українські фольклорні пісні . 4. … граю в гольф дуже вправно. 5. … робите переклад тексту з англійської на українську. 6. …ненавидиш мити посуд. 7. … розуміє мене з перших слів. 9 … їздять в школу кожного дня. 10. …дзвонить мені щодня. 

Exercise 4 (Вправа 4) Choose the correct verb from the table.

1. Джон – студент і він __________ в університеті на факультеті економіки.
2. Софія __________ українську і англійську мови, математику, фізику і хімію в школі. Її улюблений предмет – українська література.
3. Стефан і Ніколь родом з Канади, але зараз вони __________ в Україні.
4. Я __________ телевізор зараз. Я часто __________ серіал «Друзі», він дуже популярний.
5. Ти __________ подорожувати?
6. Чоловіки також __________, але вони не часто показують свої емоції.
7. Адріан кохає Марію і __________ їй щовечора.
8. Я не __________ на ліжку, я __________ на дивані.
9. Ми __________ домашнє завдання.
10. Стефан і Роберт – американці, вони не __________ по-французьки.

Exercise 6 (Вправа 6) Read the text, underline the second conjugation group of verbs and say if the sentences are true (T) or false (F).

Привіт, мене звати Джонатан. Я живу у Малібу і, звичайно, я люблю море. Я їжджу на пляж практично щодня: лежу чи сиджу на теплому піску, засмагаю, їм морозиво чи свіжі фрукти, п’ю холодний чай чи молочні коктейлі і багато говорю з туристами. Що ще я роблю? Я вчуся в університеті, тому що я хочу стати програмістом. Ви думаєте, що програмісти багато сидять на одному місці, але це не про мене: я активний хлопець, часто ходжу у спортзал і ніколи не курю. Я раджу вам не палити також, тому що це погано для здоров’я. Увечері я, зазвичай, дивлюся фільми чи серіали, іноді слухаю музику (особливо рок чи поп-рок) або читаю книжки, але сьогодні я йду на побачення. (дзинь-дзинь) Вибачте, моя дівчина Катруся дзвонить мені. Чому я тут досі стою? Я мушу йти.

1. Джонатан живе у США.
2. Він любить гори і їздить туди щотижня.
3. Джонатан грає у комп’ютерні ігри, їсть морозиво і п’є пиво на пляжі.
4. Джонатан розказує анекдоти на пляжі.
5. Джонатан – студент.
6. Він хоче стати актором.
7. Джонатан часто курить, коли хоче їсти.
8. Він має дівчину.
9. Його дівчину звати Марія.
10. Катруся пише Джонатану sms-повідомлення.

Exercise 7 (Вправа 7) Open the brackets and write the verbs in the correct form.

1. – Де Майкл? – Він вже ________________ (спати) у ліжку. 2. – Чому ти тут ________________ (стояти)? – Я чекаю на Вікторію. 3. Пітер і Рейчел ________________ (сидіти) на лавці у парку. 4. Вибачте, я не ________________ (говорити) українською мовою. 5. Ми зараз в ресторані ________________ (їсти) пасту карбонару. Вона тут дуже смачна. 6. Едіта ________________ (бачити) Пітера на пляжі. Він ________________ (лежати) і засмагає. 7. Ви ________________ (любити) подорожувати? Які країни ви відвідали? 8. Алекс та Ірина не ________________ (курити), вони – спортсмени. 9. Я дуже емоційна дівчина і часто ________________ (плакати). 10. Люди не ________________ (вірити) в цю теорію. Це абсурд.
